Referendum could be one of the factors for resolving long pending dispute with Assam: CM
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday said that referendum is one part of the factors for finding an amicable solution to the long pending boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.
“We have many factors and will look at all those factors and then take a call. Referendum may be just one part of the whole thing. Referendum may be a simple word of what people feel is, but we will look at ethnicity, administrative convenience, historical facts. We’ll look at all these factors and balance things out,” Sangma told reporters after chairing a meeting of three regional committees on inter-state boundaries.
He said that the entire process requires to look at out of the box solution by taking into consideration, historical facts, administrative convenience, mood of the people, besides economic activities.
The chief minister also said that in the disputed areas there may be a portion where the dispute does not arise.
“We are hopeful that in 20 to 30 percent of the areas we will find that there is no dispute,” he said.
