Rescue Mission launched in East Jaintia Hills District
The Rescue Mission was launched by E Kharmalki, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat on Wednesday at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, East Jaintia Hills District in which a video on the theme “A Healthy Mother, A Healthy Baby” was released in the presence of Dr. D. Shylla, District Medical & Health Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat and Dr. (Mrs.) E. L. Kharmutee, District Immunization Officer, Incharge East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat. The video illustrates the key activities to be done for reducing Maternal, Neonatal and Infant deaths.
The activities of the mission include tracking pregnancies through early Antenatal Care (ANC) checkup registration, tracking every pregnant women whose due date is within the next four months, the involvement of ASHAs, Traditional Birth Attendants, Skilled Birth Attendants, ANMs, Medical Officers, CDPOs and BDOs. The high risk mothers are identified and track through ANCs and anemic women are to be identified in the 1st trimester and corrected by the 2nd trimester. Furthermore, there is the provision and consumption of Iron Folic Acid (IFA), deworming and calcium tablets, TD vaccination given on time and counseling on nutrition.
The Chairman of the programme, E Kharmalki stressed on the importance of institutional delivery to safeguard the lives of both mothers and infants. He also said that birth spacing, family planning methods and reducing teenage pregnancy through proper counseling is part of the rescue mission efforts of the government.
“The Village Health, Sanitation and Nutrition Committees (VHSNCs), Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and village headmen can also play an important role in promoting and increasing ANC and institutional deliveries in the district”, he added.
