Resolve political interference impeding garbage’s solution
The High Court of Meghalaya on directed the Meghalaya Govt to take a more proactive role to resolve the perceived political interference impeding the setting up of permanent landfills for garbage of Jowai Town.
The Court issued the direction during the hearing of the public interest litigation filed by the Synjuk Ki Waheh Chnong Jowai versus State of Meghalaya & others. The next hearing will be held on List on July 15, next.
According to the Court, though it appears that things have improved, there does not appear to be any long-term solution in sight.
There is a perception of the Court that political considerations may be standing in the way of any long-term solution being found.
The Court hoped that better sense would prevail on persons trying to put an impediment to a long-term solution or the identification of the appropriate site.
On the ground, however, the Synjuk admitted that things have improved and the Jowai Municipal Board submits that there is now regular removal of garbage and a temporary site has been identified and the same is being used.
