Review & amendment ST’s order of 1950 in respect of Meghalaya: JCCRP
The Jaintia Coordination Committee on Reservation Policy (JCCRP) has called for the immediate review and amendment of the Scheduled Tribes Order of 1950 in respect of the State of Meghalaya as to reflect the present demographic realities of the State.
The demand was made in a representation submitted to the Expert Committee on Reservation Committee constituted by the Meghalaya Government.
“We request the removal of certain tribes, such as the Kuki and their 37 sub-tribes, from the Scheduled Tribes list for Meghalaya,” said the JCCRP.
The representation sought exclusion of various Naga tribes from the list and tribes that no longer exist in or have migrated out of Meghalaya. They also asserted that inclusion of such tribes undermines the benefits intended for the genuine and indigenous tribes of the state.
The JCCRP said that maintaining an accurate and current list is crucial to ensure that resources and opportunities reach those who are genuinely in need.
They also said that the government should review the State Reservation Policy periodically to ensure that no tribes are deprived of its benefits over time.
