Rising voices for Tura: ASPF intensifies campaign for Meghalaya’s winter capital
The demand for designating Tura as Meghalaya’s winter capital is gaining momentum, with the A’chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) spearheading a robust public awareness campaign. The movement, launched at Chisim A’pal Community Hall (Dainadubi), North Garo Hills on February 22, aims to educate and rally public support for the long-standing demand.
In collaboration with the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC), the campaign witnessed significant participation from Nokmas (headmen) and religious leaders, adding crucial support and wisdom to the initiative.
ASPF secretary Bernita Marak reiterated that the demand for a winter capital in Tura is not a new concept but stems from an oral agreement made by the state’s founding leaders. Despite repeated appeals, this commitment remains unfulfilled. The ASPF, along with the GSMC, has recently submitted a joint memorandum to the Chief Minister, pressing for immediate action.
Marak emphasized that establishing a winter capital in Tura would bridge the glaring development disparity between Shillong and the Garo Hills region. The current necessity of travelling to Shillong for administrative matters imposes a financial burden on many residents, restricting access to essential services. A winter capital in Tura would alleviate these challenges, ensuring equitable growth and governance in the state.

During the meeting, a resolution was passed to expand awareness initiatives across the Garo Hills and remote villages. Nokma Sorders pledged to disseminate information on the movement and persuade their local representatives to advocate for the cause in Assembly sessions.
In a concluding statement, advocate Bernita Marak clarified that this campaign is not an act of defiance against the government but a plea to honor the vision of Meghalaya’s founding leaders, particularly the late Capt. Williamson A. Sangma, the state’s first Chief Minister. The ASPF remains steadfast in its mission to turn this long-cherished aspiration into reality.
