Rivers Kyrhuhkhla and Lunar to be rejuvenated with algae
The two polluted rivers in East Jaintia Hills District namely Kyrhuhkhla and Lunar will be rejuvenated with the use of humble algae under the Meghalaya Environment Restoration Funds said Meghalaya Forest & Environment Minister James K Sangma on Saturday.
Sangma told a gathering after laying the foundation stone for the Project Restoration of Kyrhuhkhla and Lunar Rivers using Phycoremediation Technology at Umsyllih, Khliehriat East.
The Minister informed a pilot project at certain point in River Lukha was carried out by Trinity International where nature was used to treat nature problem and the project tested successfully.
Sangma said that the technology is marvellous as they are using humble algae to correct the PH value of the river.
He further said that the PH value of the river is integral to the life of any river for if it is too alkaline or acidic will not support aquatic life and the river will actually be death.
He added that the project will restore the PH value of the two rivers to 6.57 and also to get rid of heavy toxicity metals and rejuvenate the rivers, which occurred due to acid mine drainage.
The Minister said that the project will be extending to other rivers which is being polluted by heavy metal or acid mine drainage.
