Road Blockade suspended road blockade in NH-6 along East Jaintia Hills District for three days
The Joint Action Committee has decided to suspend the 24 hours long road blockade for three days following assurance for repairing the dilapidated road of National Highway 6 along the East Jaintia Hills District failing which they will resort to an indefinite strike.
Organized by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of various villages along NH-6, the road blockade commenced at 6 am on Thursday morning and was supposed to culminate at 6 am on Friday was called after the Meghalaya government and NHAI’s failed to repair the deplorable condition of the road along the Highway despite repeated demands by the JAC.
The villagers of Ratacherra, Dona Umbluh, Dona Skul, Umkiang, Lumphyllut, Lumsoski, Pyrtakuna, Borsara, Kuliang, and Shymplong Tongseng came out in large numbers and sit in the middle of the roads in their respective villages to enforce the road blockade called by the JAC. The road blockade which last for more than eight hours has adversely the vehicular movement as National Highway 6 is one of the major highways in the northeastern region, connecting parts of Assam (Barak Valley), Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and part of Manipur.
The road blockade was suspended after a meeting was held between Executive Magistrate G Warji, NHAI Technical Manager Biswa Jyoti Lahkar and leaders of JAC in Umkiang on Thursday evening.
Informing media persons after the meeting, JAC Chairman Lasting Pala said that they have suspended the road blockade after the NHAI assured them that the road will be repair immediately but they have also decided that they will suspend the road blockade for three days and if no repair work is started within three days, then they will go for an indefinite strike.
