Roads can act as permanent boundary: HSPDP leader
SHILLONG: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has suggested the state government to construct roads for connecting the villages along the inter-state border with Assam.
“It is the need of the hour for the state government to consider the construction of roads to connect our border villages,” HSPDP leader and Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar told reporters here on Wednesday.
Lyngdoh, who was part of MDA delegation, which recently visited to Balakhawa village in Ri Bhoi District, said that they had to travel over 40 kilometers on Assam road to reach to this particular village.
“I have observed that in case there is any problem in the neighbouring state, our people residing in these villages, will really suffer,” he said.
Asked, the legislator informed that he had also raised this issue in the floor of the Assembly adding “We believe that the roads can be permanent boundary to separate the two states. If there are proper roads, I feel this problem of encroachment can be addressed.”
According to him, the recent incident at Balakhawa was also mainly due to under development in the border villages.
He said there are people who are opposing the road construction taken up by Assam but there are also those who are in favour as they want development and this issue has created a divisioin among the people at the border.
“Therefore, we feel that the government should take up the matter seriously by constructing proper roads for our border villages,” Lyngdoh asserted.
