Robert Kharshiing passed away
Former Rajya Sabha MP Robert Kharshiing passed away this morning at Nazareth Hospital, Shillong after prolonged illness.
Robret was born January 7, 1959 and represented Meghalaya in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament during April 2002 to April 2008.
He was brother of senior police officer Francis Kharshiing, John Kharshiing and social activist Agnes Kharshiing
The first ever People’s Parliament in the State was organized in Mawphlang, East Khasi Hills District on October, 2007 under initiative of Robert Kharshiing as Chairman of Rajya Sabha Grassroots Democracy Advisory Council.
Robert Kharshiing had hold the position of President of Khasi Students Union from 1981-1984. He was the mastermind for designing the present blue flag of the KSU and during his tenure the Constitution of the KSU was first drafted.
He contested the assembly election from Nongkrem constituency in 1993 on the erstwhile Hills People Union (HPU), but he lost the election against former Foods & Civil Supplies Minister Late HS Shylla who contested the election on APHLC (A)
after Congress denied him ticket. In 1990 Robert won the Bye Election to Legislative Assembly from 17- Laitumkhrah Constituency now Shillong East Constituency.
