Rs 100 crores allocated for Early Childhood Development Mission in Meghalaya

Asserting that the first six years of a child’s life are foundational to lifelong learning and development, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced the allocation of Rs. 100 Crore for Early Childhood Development Mission and Rs. 342 Crore to strengthening nutrition for the next financial year.
Sangma informed that under Early Childhood Development Mission and in convergence with other ongoing schemes, “we will construct and upgrade Anganwadi Centres in more than 2,000 locations in the next three years.” He also said that the State currently has 6,090 Anganwadi Centres for ensuring early childhood development – only 55% of these are housed in government buildings.
The Chief Minister said that the Anganwadi Centres in the State provide supplementary nutrition through hot cooked meals and take-home rations while the Self-Help Groups are delivering nutritional services to 44,078 children and 9,533 mothers in 1,500 uncovered villages.
He also said that Mid-day meals are being provided in 11,000 schools and benefiting more than 6 lakh learners while adding the State has managed to remarkably increase the percentage of schools having School Nutrition Garden from a modest 9% to 80% in just one year.
