Rymbui appeals to citizens to report against extortion cases
State home minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Tuesday appealed to citizens to report against cases of extortion.
“Anybody who has got this type of extortion or demand notes as the case may, should report to the police department and their names will be kept confidential,” Rymbui told reporters.
This came in the wake of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) allegedly serving demand notes to several big business tycoons across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region in the name of “income tax”.
He said a circular had been issued by the police department in this regard. “However, complying with the demand will tantamount to helping the so-called anti national elements,” Rymbui added.
Asked, the home minister however refused to disclose the number of victims who were served with demand notes.
He assured that police are on the job to do what is necessary.
“We have given full authority to the police (to solve this issue),” he said.
