SAANS Campaign launched in East Jaintia Hills

The Social Awareness and Action to Neutralize Pneumonia Successfully (SAANS) campaign was launched today at Sutnga CHC in East Jaintia Hills District. The event was organized by the District Medical and Health Officer’s office.

The programme was attended by District Medical and Health Officer Dr. D. Shylla, District Immunization Officer Dr. N.P. Suchiang, Medical and Health Officer in charge of Sutnga CHC Dr. R. Toi, CHO Sutnga CHC R. Pala, other health officials, ASHAs, and local residents.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Shylla emphasized that pneumonia, though not a new disease, is treatable. He highlighted the importance of early detection and community participation in eradicating pneumonia and stressed ongoing initiatives to combat childhood pneumonia, aiming to reduce the child mortality rate.

Dr. Suchiang outlined the types of pneumonia, its treatment, and the importance of immunization. She urged awareness of the disease’s symptoms and called on ASHAs to promote institutional deliveries for better infant care.

During the programme, CHO R. Pala and ASHAs demonstrated the seven steps of proper handwashing. Other speakers included Dr. Toi, NHM District Programme Manager A. Dhar, and NHM Block Programme Manager Theimon Phawa.
