Sanjukta Dutta’s ‘Joonak – The Light of Moon’ illuminates Bharat Tex with Assamese handloom elegance
Renowned fashion designer Sanjukta Dutta captivated audiences at Bharat Tex 2025 with the unveiling of her latest collection, Joonak – The Light of Moon. Presented as part of “Earthloom – Threads of Heritage”, the collection was a tribute to Assam’s rich handloom legacy, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary aesthetics.
Curated by the Aalekh Foundation in collaboration with CITI (Confederation of Indian Textile Industry), Earthloom – Threads of Heritage served as a grand showcase for sustainable and traditional Indian textiles. Sanjukta Dutta’s Joonak stood out with its striking black and red palette, symbolizing strength, passion, and mystery.
The collection featured intricately woven silk ensembles, bold patterns, and fluid drapes, combining traditional Assamese motifs with modern silhouettes. Each creation reflected the designer’s commitment to preserving India’s textile heritage while embracing contemporary design sensibilities.
The show opened with an ethereal appearance by Aimee Baruah, a three-time National Award-winning filmmaker, actor, director, and entrepreneur. Her graceful presence set the tone for an evening celebrating Assamese craftsmanship and cultural pride.
As models graced the runway in Joonak, the deep black and fiery red hues mirrored the enigmatic glow of the moon, creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle. The highlight of the evening was the presence of Bollywood icon Poonam Dhillon as the showstopper. Draped in a breathtaking ensemble from the collection, she radiated elegance and mystique, perfectly embodying Sanjukta Dutta’s vision.
Speaking about her inspiration, Sanjukta Dutta shared, “Joonak is my tribute to the moon’s soft yet powerful radiance. This collection merges the richness of Assamese silk with bold, modern expressions. The black and red hues symbolize confidence and mystery, making each piece a statement of timeless elegance.”
Bharat Tex 2025 provided the perfect platform for Earthloom – Threads of Heritage, bringing together leading designers and textile artisans to celebrate India’s sustainable handloom traditions. The event reinforced the importance of preserving indigenous weaves while fostering innovation in textile fashion.
