Former Mawlai legislator Process T Sawkmie on Friday assured to bring necessary amendments to the building byelaws of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) if elected in the coming ADC elections, to be held on February 21.

After filing his nomination papers as an independent candidate, Sawkmie said, “I am very much concerned about the building byelaws of the KHADC because it has affected the people to a large extent.”

He cited, “People, who are buying small plots of land of only 1500 sq ft to construct a house are in a fix as they have to part some portion of the land as per the building byelaws. Apart from that, there are too many formalities and technical problems and there is also a delay to get permission from the district council.”

Sawkmie further alleged that people, who went ahead with construction of their houses after getting NOC from the headmen, are deprived of electricity and water connection because the authorities concerned maintained that they cannot give without permission from the KHADC.

“Therefore, if I win in the upcoming elections, I would raise this issue immediately in the first session of the council and I know all MDCs will support as we need to bring an amendment to this,” he assured.

He emphasized the need to strengthen the traditional institutions and said, “It is time for us to give honorarium to headmen so that they can give the best services to the people of the region.”
