Seminar explores New Perspectives in Assamese Language
The Department of Assamese, Tezpur University (TU), organized a two-day seminar titled “New Perspectives in Assamese Language, Literature, and Culture” from November 19 to explore the rich dimensions of Assamese language, literature, and cultural heritage.
In his inaugural address, TU Vice Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh highlighted the Assamese language as a living reflection of its people’s history and evolution. “Assamese language, from its origins till today, has been shaped by myriad influences, each contributing to its unique identity,” he remarked.
Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Nath, Associate Professor, Gauhati University, delivered the keynote address, offering a profound analysis of figures like Sankardev, Madhavdev, Laxminath Bezbarua, and Krishna Kanta Handiqui, whose contributions have been pivotal in shaping Assam’s intellectual legacy. He also addressed the challenges and opportunities for the growth of the Assamese language and literature.
Prof. Farheena Danta, Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, TU, spoke as the guest of honour, examining emerging trends and innovations in Assamese literature, and balancing traditional and contemporary forms.
Dr. Juri Dutta, Head of the Department of Assamese, extended a warm welcome to participants, while Dr. Sanjib Deka, Assistant Professor and seminar coordinator, explained the objectives of the event. The seminar provided a platform for scholars and enthusiasts to engage with the evolving narratives of Assamese language, literature, and culture.
