Seven para-athletes shine at 6th Meghalaya Games
For the first time in the Meghalaya Games, seven para-athletes, comprising four women and three men, are participating in the para-shooting event. Despite their impoverished backgrounds, they have persevered with the support of the Shooting Association of Meghalaya and the Government of Meghalaya.
An interpreter, Valentino Shullai, narrated that the Shooting Association conducted trials at the School and Centre for Hearing and Handicapped Children, selecting nine participants out of 40 for practice.
These athletes, though facing challenges like lack of shooting tools during holidays and communication barriers due to their hearing impairments, continue to train diligently. Their coach, Smt. Balari Rani, and their school’s headmistress have been significant support, with Rani learning sign language to communicate effectively.
The para-athletes are determined to inspire the sports community, urging enthusiasts to work hard in their chosen sports. They express pride and gratitude for being included in the State Games for the first time and hope to qualify for national and international competitions.
The 6th Meghalaya Games saw the highest participation to date with over 3500 athletes competing across 23 venues.
