Shillong Golfer Gaurav Bajaj win at Amateur Open in Kolkata
After a hard fought final round, Shillong Golfer Gaurav Bajaj brought laurels to Meghalaya by winning in the mid amateur category at Golf Trade Amateur Open at Tollygunj Golf Course, Kolkata on Wednesday.
In the two day event, Bajaj’s lead at the end of the first round and his final round 48 was enough to give him a stroke cushion over the runner up in the category Sanjeev Kumar who shot a round of 47.
The Prize was given by Mr Indrajit Bhalotia former National Champion and a renowned Golf Professional.
Kolkatas Tapas Sardar faltered initially but ultimately held his nerve to secure his first win in his career on IGU Eastern India Amateur Golf Feeder at the rain shortened Golftrade Amateur Open. The young lad shot a nervy eight over 42 at the rain-soaked Tollygunge Club to get the better of the rest of the field by just two stroke. Incidentally, he was leading by five stroke coming into the final round.
As it was feared, the Tollygunj Golf course was hit by incessant rainfall since early morning which posed a lot of challenges to the golfers. Keeping in the mind the safety of the players as well as the famed course, the tee offs were delayed by two hours and a little later, the organizers took a call to reduce the final round to nine holes.
Players were seen struggling to match their potential due to the adverse playing condition but as it is witnessed everywhere, there were some exceptions.
In ladies category, Sinjini Mukherjee matched the lowest score of the day that is a two over 36 to bring home back to back winners trophy. Karishma Samadder carded 39 to secure the sole second spot. Kuo Thai Chiang produced a final round 38 to win the senior category. S K Tiwarys last round 39 gave him the second place. The super senior category was won by J L Roy who shot 49.
