Shillong Lajong downs Aizawl FC 3-1 in I-League clash
Shillong Lajong deepened Aizawl FC’s woes with a 3-1 victory in their I-League 2024-25 encounter on Thursday.
This win propelled Lajong to fifth place on the table with 16 points, while Aizawl remained in the bottom three. The winners led 1-0 at halftime.
Douglas Tardin, Hardy Cliff Nongbri, and Phrangki Buam scored for Shillong Lajong, while Lalbiakdika netted a consolation goal for Aizawl FC during injury time.
In the ninth minute, Phrangki Buam was fouled inside the box by Aizawl’s goalkeeper, John Lalruatfela. Douglas Tardin converted the penalty with ease, giving Lajong an early lead. Aizawl struggled to make an impact in the first half, with their best attempt easily saved by Ranit Sarkar.
After the restart, Lajong doubled their lead when Tardin assisted Hardy Cliff Nongbri, who scored with a first-time shot. Lajong continued to dominate, and Phrangki Buam scored their third goal after a brilliant play from Nongbri. Aizawl, reduced to 10 players after Lalthankhuma’s second yellow card, managed to score a consolation goal through Lalbiakdika’s free kick.
With this result, Shillong Lajong now occupy the fifth spot in the points table with 16 points from 11 matches.
Lajong will next play against Real Kashmir FC on February 2, 2025, at 2 pm in TRC Football Turf, Srinagar.
