Shillong Lajong triumph over Mawlai to win fifth Shillong Premier League title
Shillong Lajong FC and Mawlai SC battled fiercely in the final match of the OC Blue Shillong Premier League (SPL) 2024 season, held on Saturday evening, with Lajong emerging victorious 2-1 to claim their fifth title.
Mawlai entered the game as strong favorites, having remained unbeaten in their previous 17 matches and leading the table for most of the season. They needed just a draw to secure their third consecutive SPL title. Thousands of fans packed the SSA Stadium, largely backing Mawlai, and the match lived up to its billing as a thrilling contest between two of the season’s best teams.

Lajong took an early lead through Abhay Chettri (10’), who scored his only goal of the season. Mawlai responded by ramping up the pressure, creating multiple chances, but Lajong’s defense held firm. The second half saw both teams pushing hard, with Mawlai’s Donlad Diengdoh and Kevin Rymbai coming close to scoring. Lajong’s goalkeeper, Siwel Rymbai, made crucial saves, while Mawlai’s Lambhamiki Lamare was equally impressive in denying Lajong’s attacks.
Lajong extended their lead in the 76th minute through Samchaphrang Lato, who scored his third goal in as many matches off a precise Babysunday Marngar cross. Mawlai, however, did not back down, and their persistence paid off when substitute Khrawkupar Jana won a penalty in the 88th minute. Damanbhalang Chyne calmly converted the spot-kick, setting up a tense final few minutes.
Both teams finished the season level on 45 points, with Lajong securing the title based on head-to-head results and a superior goal difference. Mawlai, who had been dominant throughout the campaign, came agonizingly close to a third consecutive title but fell just short in the final hurdle.
Despite the result, Mawlai showcased resilience and attacking intent, proving why they were one of the most consistent teams of the season. Their unbeaten streak of 17 matches was a testament to their strength, and their performance in the final reflected their determination.
As champions, Lajong received Rs 6 lakh, while Mawlai earned Rs 3 lakh as runners-up. The chief guest, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri, presented the trophies and prizes. Deibormame was recognized as the Top Scorer of the season with 20 goals and received a memento from Meghalaya Football Association President Hamletson Dohling.
To further support the SPL, Minister Warjri handed over a sanction letter from the state government, granting Rs 8 lakh to the SSA. The association’s General Secretary, Dipshon L Nongbri, expressed gratitude to the minister and Chief Minister for their continued support in developing local football.
The minister also lowered the SSA flag, officially closing the 2024 season. The 2025 football calendar will commence with club registrations and player transfers, leading up to the U-20 Fourth Division in June.
