Shillong makes history as India ends 489-day drought with 3-0 win over Maldives
Shillong witnessed a historic night on Wednesday as it hosted its first-ever senior men’s international football match, where India ended their 489-day winless streak with a commanding 3-0 victory over Maldives in a FIFA international friendly at the JN Stadium. The match also marked the much-anticipated return of Sunil Chhetri, who scored his 95th international goal to cap off a dominant performance by the Blue Tigers.
India took control early, with Rahul Bheke opening the scoring in the 34th minute, heading in a precise delivery from Brandon Fernandes. Liston Colaco doubled the lead in the 66th minute with another well-placed header from a Mahesh Singh corner. Chhetri then sealed the win in the 76th minute, finishing a low cross from Liston to mark his return in style.

The victory was significant for multiple reasons—it was India’s first win in nearly 16 months, Manolo Marquez’s maiden triumph as the national team head coach, and a morale booster ahead of their crucial 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifier against Bangladesh on March 25 at the same venue. Maldives, on the other hand, used the match to prepare for their qualifier against the Philippines.
A packed stadium roared in excitement as Chhetri, playing his 152nd international match, made an instant impact upon his return. The legendary striker was substituted in the 82nd minute to a standing ovation, with young forward Irfan Yadwad replacing him.
The event was graced by dignitaries, including the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Shakliar Warjri, and Meghalaya Football Association President, Hamletson Dohling, who greeted the players and officials before kick-off.
This victory extended India’s dominance over Maldives, bringing their head-to-head tally to 13 wins in 19 encounters. The last meeting between the two sides was in 2021, where India triumphed 3-1 in the SAFF Championship.
