Congress Shillong MP Vincent H Pala has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention for the immediate appointment of the Vice Chancellor for the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Shillong.
“In the interests of the thousands of students I humbly request you to kindly make a personal intervention and appoint a new VC at the earliest possible without any further delay,” Pala said in his letter to the PM on Saturday.
The MP informed that he had already written a letter to the Union Education Minister on the matter but it seems that action is yet to be taken.
He said in the meantime the sorry state of affairs of the University continues to fall downwards adding “The ranking of the university has continued to scale down from year to year.”
Pala further quoted the NAAC report, 2017 which mentioned that poor quality administration and leadership as one of the most important reasons for the University’s fall in ranking.
Stating that the most recent and glaring fall of the University in NIRF, 2020, he said NEHU stands at 49 which is a 10 place fall from the previous year. For the last five years, the administrative performance remains poor, and the score on the perception factor of NEHU reflects the same.
He further informed that the vacant teaching posts in various departments have remained vacant till date adding that in the non-filling of the vacant teaching positions, the students are at the receiving end.
