Shillong Municipal warn against dumping of garbages in streams leading to Wahumkhrah
The Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) has warned the people of Shillong against disposing solid waste & discharging untreated sewage into the streams leading to Wahumkhrah and Umshyrpi River causing contamination of the water bodies causing resulting in harmful diseases.
Such dumping of garbage tantamount to violation of Meghalaya Municipal Act, 1973, the Meghalaya Solid Waste Management Bye Laws, 2020 & the Implementation of Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation, Act 2013.
The SMB appealed to people of Shillong to segregate and store the waste into bio-degradable & non-biodegradable wastes in suitable bins and handover segregated wastes to waste collectors authorized by the SMB.
The Board appeled against throwing, burning or burying of the solid waste on streets, open public spaces, in the drain or water bodies.
The people should not discharge untreated sewage directly into drains and water bodies.
Anyone found in violation of any such offence shall be penalized as per law under the “Polluters Pay Principle” and may be included as co-respondent before the Hon’ble National Green Tribunal in OA.192/2022.
