Siang Upper Multipurpose Project to be a strategic boon for development: Arunachal Dy CM
Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein addressed concerns surrounding the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project during a public meeting in Boleng, Siang district on December 19.
Mein clarified that the project, declared a national project in 2008, is of crucial importance for national security, particularly in light of China’s plans to construct a massive 60,000 MW dam upstream in Tsangpo, which could pose risks to the people living near the Siang River and downstream areas.
Mein highlighted the multipurpose benefits of the project, including flood control, water storage, irrigation, navigation, and power generation. The dam would help regulate water discharge and runoff, enhancing the region’s resilience to floods and boosting socio-economic development. He also reassured the public that the presence of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the area was for the safety of the project personnel and machinery involved in the survey operations, stressing that the security measures were precautionary.
Further, Mein explained that after the Project Feasibility Report (PFR), an impact assessment would be conducted, followed by the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), which would define the dam’s capacity. He assured the local population that their voices would be heard through a Public Hearing process, allowing them to express their views on the project.
Mein emphasized the project’s role in the region’s development, creating job opportunities, generating revenue, and improving local infrastructure like healthcare and education. He reassured that temporary labor colonies would be set up for workers, and their presence would not alter the region’s demography, as they would leave once the project is completed.
To counter the negative narratives being spread, Mein shared that a Committee on the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, headed by former Minister Tamiyo Taga, had been formed to raise awareness and educate the public on the project’s positive impacts. He urged the public to support the initiative for the prosperity and security of the region, emphasizing unity and collaboration to maximize the benefits of this national project.
