Sniffer dog deployed in Laokhowa-Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary to combat wildlife crime

In a significant step towards strengthening anti-poaching measures, the Assam Forest Department, with the support of Aaranyak, has deployed a trained sniffer dog unit at the Laokhowa-Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary (LBWLS) in Nagaon district. This initiative aims to enhance wildlife crime prevention and surveillance in the rhino-bearing sanctuary, which forms a crucial part of the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve.
The newly deployed K9 unit features a Belgian Malinois (Female) sniffer dog, specially trained for anti-poaching operations. Accompanied by a trained handler, the dog will be available 24/7 to assist forest personnel in tracking poachers, detecting illegal wildlife activities, and reinforcing security measures within the sanctuary.
This deployment was made possible with logistical support from the Assam Forest Department, particularly the LBWLS authorities.
The K9 Dog Unit is a key initiative under the Legal and Advocacy Division of Aaranyak, a premier biodiversity conservation organization in India. It plays a vital role in coordinating efforts among enforcement agencies to curb wildlife crimes.
Aaranyak’s sniffer dog units have previously been instrumental in assisting forest and police officials in other key rhino habitats, including Kaziranga National Park, Orang National Park, Manas National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.
By expanding the reach of these specialized K9 units, Aaranyak continues to empower frontline conservation teams and enhance law enforcement capabilities in Assam’s protected areas.

The Laokhowa-Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary is home to several endangered species, including the greater one-horned rhinoceros, making it a prime target for poachers. The introduction of sniffer dog surveillance is expected to boost anti-poaching operations, deter illegal wildlife trade, and provide real-time tracking assistance to authorities.
This initiative marks a proactive approach towards wildlife protection, reinforcing Assam’s commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity and combating illegal activities in its forests and wildlife sanctuaries.
