Sohiong Constituency election deferred following sudden demise of former Home Minister
Following the sudden demise of former home minister and UDP candidate HDR Lyngdoh from Sohiong Constituency on Monday’s evening, the Election Commission of India has deferred the polling day for the Assembly Election for the said Constituency to be notified later.
Lyngdoh passed away at a Bethany Hospital, Shillong due to cardiac arrest.
A former five-time legislator of Sohiong constituency, Lyngdoh quit the Congress and joined the UDP for contesting the upcoming Assembly polls to be held on February 27.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya chief electoral officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor said that the poll process in Sohiong constituency is adjourned.
He also said that the election will now be held only in 59 seats due to sudden demise of Lyngdoh.
After filing his nomination on February 3, HDR Lyngdoh had expressed confidence that he would be re-elected from Sohiong so that he could repair the damage done to the constituency in the last five years.
“I have decided to contest again to repair the damage that has been done in the last five years,” he had said.
On his decision to join a regional political outfit, the former Congress leader had said, “I want to join the regional party to uplift the regionalism in the state with a national outlook.”
“It is the voice of the people, they are crying and wanting that the party of regional entities should rule the state now,” he had stated.
