SOS Children’s Village Shillong marks 25 years of transforming lives

SOS Children’s Village Shillong celebrated its 25th anniversary with a Silver Jubilee event at its campus near Umiam Lake, bringing together children, caregivers, dignitaries, and community leaders. Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh and SOS Children’s Villages India CEO Sumanta Kar highlighted the organization’s enduring commitment to nurturing vulnerable children.
Since 2000, the village has supported 155 children across family and youth homes. Its Supervised Independent Living (SIL) program has helped 65 young adults transition to self-reliance, with 108 successfully completing the program. The Family Strengthening Programme has enabled 523 families to achieve independence, while Foster and Kinship Care initiatives provide essential support to 76 children.
The event included a tree plantation drive, symbolizing growth and renewal, alongside vibrant cultural performances from children and youth. Former SOS mothers shared heartfelt stories, and a commemorative souvenir booklet was unveiled, documenting the village’s remarkable journey.
Looking ahead, SOS Children’s Village Shillong remains steadfast in its mission to provide a safe and supportive environment, ensuring a brighter future for many more children.
