South-West Monsoon sets over Kerala, advances into Northeast
Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala and advanced into most parts of the Northeast, including the entire Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and most parts of Tripura, Meghalaya and Assam on Thursday (May 30), a senior official of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said here.
The normal monsoon onset date for Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam is June 5.
The monsoon hit Kerala’s coasts a day earlier than forecast by the IMD, which had announced the onset of monsoon over Kerala by May 31.
“The Northern Limit of Monsoon passes through 13°N/60°E, 12°N/65°E, 11°N/70°E, Amini, Kannur, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, 8.5°N/80°E, 13°N/84°E, 16°N/87°E, 20°N/91°E, Agartala, Dhubri, 27°N/89.5°E. Conditions are favourable for further advance of the Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, the remaining parts of southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep area and Kerala, some parts of Karnataka. Some more parts of south Tamil Nadu, some parts of Gulf of Manner, and some more parts Southwest & Central Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of Northeast Bay of Bengal and Assam and Meghalaya and some parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during next 2- 3 days,” Dr Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, DDG, RMC, IMD said.
The IMD noted that Cyclone Remal, which struck West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday, may have drawn the monsoon flow to the Bay of Bengal, potentially contributing to its early onset in the northeast.
“The cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and neighbourhood persists and now seen extends upto 3.1 km above mean sea level,” Dr Shaw said.
As a result, rainfall over Assam will continue from May 30–June 4. The chief amount of rainfall ( >= 7 cm) during the last 24 hours.
Light to moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over Cachar, Hailakandi, Karimganj and heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorm and lightning is very likely to occur over Kokrajhar, Chirang, Goalpara , Bongaigaon, Bajali, Tamulpur, Barpeta, Baksa, Darrang, Udalguri,Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur, Dima Hasao and heavy rain with thunderstorm and lightning along with is very likely to occur over Dhubri, South Salmara, Nalbari, Kamrup (Rural), West Karbi Anglong, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia districts and heavy rain with thunderstorm and Lightning very likely to occur at isolated places over Morigaon, Nagaon districts.
The rainfall activity will continue till June 4.
