‘Sparsh’: Bajali’s groundbreaking healthcare programme redefines elder care in Assam
In a landmark initiative, the Bajali district administration in lower Assam has launched ‘Sparsh,’ a comprehensive healthcare programme aimed at supporting residents aged 90 and above. Designed to provide home-based health monitoring and medical care, this pioneering project ensures that nearly 400 elderly citizens receive regular health evaluations conducted by teams of doctors, nurses, and paramedics.
The programme is a compassionate response to the challenges faced by senior citizens in remote villages, where access to hospitals can be difficult due to transportation and mobility issues. Comprehensive health reports are maintained for each individual, ensuring personalized and ongoing care for their physical and mental well-being.
Home-Based Health Monitoring: Regular visits by healthcare professionals ensure timely evaluations and medical care for senior citizens.
Comprehensive Health Records: Personalized reports track health conditions, ensuring continuity of care.

Emergency Support: Free transportation to hospitals is available for medical emergencies.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the district administration for its inclusive approach, emphasizing the program’s vital role in safeguarding the dignity and well-being of elderly residents. “This initiative is leaving no one behind and acting as a strong support for the super senior citizens of the district,” Sarma wrote on X.
Union Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, also lauded the initiative during a recent visit to Pathsala, recognizing it as a compassionate and effective governance model.
Bajali District Commissioner Mridul Kumar Das, who conceptualized the initiative, explained its development: “For many families, it is challenging to bring elderly members to hospitals due to age-related factors and transportation issues from remote villages. After analyzing these challenges, we collaborated with government doctors to create a plan, and the programme launched in November.”
Healthcare professionals have also noted the invaluable advice shared by senior citizens during health visits. “Many of them advised us on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including eating hygienic food and living stress-free lives,” said Kulen Kakati, Senior Medical Officer of Pathsala Civil Hospital.
As ‘Sparsh’ sets a precedent for elder care in Assam, the initiative is being hailed as a model of compassionate governance. Bajali’s innovative approach is inspiring other districts to consider similar inclusive healthcare models, ensuring that elderly citizens across Assam receive the care and respect they deserve.
