Sparsh Leprosy Awareness Campaign
JOWAI: The office of the District Medical and Health Officer, Jowai on Wednesday conducted an awareness programme on Sparsh Leprosy at Jowai Civil Hospital Ialong chaired by Dr. K.C Ajar, District Medical & Health Officer.
The awareness campaign started with 2 minutes silence on Martyrdom Day remembering the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi the “Father of the Nation”.
R.S Manners, MCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Jaiñtia Hills who was present read out the message from the Deputy Commissioner declaring that no stone will be left unturned to make our district free from Leprosy and end stigma and discrimination against persons affected by Leprosy.
Dr. R.Lanong, Leprosy Consultant NLEP, North Eastern States gave a brief introduction on the purpose of Sparsh (gentle touch) Leprosy awareness Campaign. Dr. F Pasweth, Dermatologist, Jowai Civil Hospital spoke in detail on Leprosy signs and symptoms, early detection and treatment. He emphasized that people need not be afraid of it as it is curable.
The headman of Ialong Village B. Shylla thanked the office of the Health Department for having organized such a programme creating awareness amongst the public, encouraging the people to take steps to seek early treatment to avoid deformities.
Role play depicting the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi towards the Anti Leprosy work was presented by the Bharat Scouts and Guides, Nangbah. One of the cured Leprosy patient gave a testimony and encouraged the people to come forward for treatment as the disease is curable.
Medical Superintendent of Jowai Civil Hospital, Ialong, Additional DM&HO, Specialist Public Health and Staff of Jowai Civil Hospital were also present.
