SPB to summon authorities of CPWD, JNV over non-functional of STP

SHILLONG: The State Planning Board (SPB)has decided to summon the authorities of the central public works department and the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya next week over the non-functional of the sewage treatment plant which led to the shutting down of the school for the past one month. 

The decision was taken after aggrieved parents of the JNV students met the chairman of the board Lambor Malngiang at the secretariat requesting for his immediate intervention into the matter, here on Friday. 

It may be mentioned here, the state Assembly’s Committee on Environment has ordered closure of the JNV School at Mawphlang on June 26, until the sewage treatment plant is made functional by the school authority. 

This came after the committee headed by Independent legislator from Mawphlang SK Sunn during its inspection conducted last month found that the school has been discharging untreated sewage water directly to the Umiew river, from where water is supplied to Shillong city. 

After the meeting, Malngiang told reporters that the parents of over 400 students have requested the state government to immediately intervene into the matter to ensure that the school reopen at the earliest so that the academic interest of the students are not hampered. 

The chairman said that he would immediately summon the officials of the CPWD and the regional director of the JNV on Friday next week. 

“Necessary directions will be given to the authorities concerned that they should ensure compliance with the order issued by the Assembly panel and that the school reopens within August,” he said. 

Stating that the government is concern about the welfare of the students, Malngiang however said but discharging of untreated sewage water directly to the river would no doubt affect the health being of the citizens who are depending drinking water supply from the river.
