State police to deploy divers for retrieving weapons dumped in Umkhrah river
The state police has decided deploy divers for retrieving the weapons which were snatched from the police of Mawkynroh outpost by unidentified youth during the protest on August 15 and allegedly dumped at Umkhrah river.
This was informed by the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger to the dorbar shnong of Jaiaw Laitdom and Mawlai Phudmawri, who had conducted a joint inspection to Jingkieng Umpohliew on Sunday
It may be mentioned here that weapons and vehicle of the Mawkynroh police outpost were snatched during the August 15-protest against the alleged gunning down of the former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.
However reports have claimed that a letter sent to media house had indicated that the youth had dumped the weapons into the river at Jingkieng Umpohliew, which falls under Jaiaw Laitdom.
The footbridge build over Umkhrah river by the PWD is frequently used by residents of Jaiaw Laitdom and Mawlai Phudmawrie.
Headman of Jaiaw Laitdom FB Kharbangar informed that they had decided to visit the alleged place of occurrence following reports claiming that the weapons have been dumped in this location.
“We however are yet to know the exact location. Therefore, we have decided to again meet tomorrow on this issue,” he said.
He said both the dorbar shnong want that the weapons should be retrieved at the earliest possible.
“We want peace and normalcy to return to the state capital,” Kharbangar said while asserting the need to work together with the police for overall peace and tranquility of the each and every localitly in Shillong.
The dorbar shnong functionaries also informed that the SP had assured to deploy divers to retrieve the weapons.
