Statue of Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem demolished in Dhaka
A statue of U Tirot Sing Syiem which was unveiled by the Meghalaya government at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Dhaka earlier this year, has been demolished by a mob during the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Arts and Culture Minister Paul Lyngdoh said, “I have just seen a video sent by one media person showing the destruction of the entire IGCC and apparently the statue of U Tirot Sing Syiem also was demolished by a mob.”
Asked, Lyngdoh said, “We have just seen and have just watched this video five minutes back so apparently there is huge anti-India campaign which is ongoing in that country and in the process the attack was meant on the Indian High Commission Cultural Centre and since the monument was erected within the premises of that Centre it also fell prey to these mobs of arsonists and rioters.”
“According to the video, I think the bust is demolished but the lower portion wearing the name of Tirot Sing, that is still intact,” he added
