Strengthening Security and Governance in Shillong Cantonment Areas

In a concerted effort to enhance security and governance in the Cantonment areas of Shillong, the Mission Director DREAM mission, in collaboration with the Superintendent of Police (SP) of East Khasi Hills (EKH), met with the CEO of the Cantonment Board, Shillong, Shri Ayush Maurya, on 11th February 2025 to discuss critical security measures.

During the discussions, it was agreed that joint meetings will be conducted on a regular basis, and collective inspections will be carried out to effectively assess and address prevailing security issues. This collaborative approach is aimed at fostering a safer and more secure environment for all residents.

A key concern raised during the meeting was the vulnerability of hotspots to infiltration. Given that Cantonment areas do not fall under the jurisdiction of Dorbar Shnongs, this poses unique challenges. To mitigate these risks, a strategic infiltration control plan is being formulated to ensure that unauthorized movements are closely monitored and curtailed.

In a significant step towards enhancing surveillance and public safety, CCTV cameras will be installed at key locations within the Cantonment areas. This initiative is designed to strengthen the security infrastructure, deter criminal activities, and provide real-time monitoring to law enforcement agencies.

Additionally, enhanced surveillance is expected to play a crucial role in preventing illegal activities, particularly drug-related issues, which are a growing concern in the region. The Mission Director DREAM mission expressed his gratitude to the CEO of the Cantonment Board, Shillong, for being sensitive to the security concerns raised and for lending full support to the suggested measures. This cooperation marks a vital step in the ongoing efforts to ensure a safe and secure Shillong.
