Students demand govt to act on climate change
SHILLONG: College and school students in the city on Friday took out a protest march demanding the authorities to act on climate change.
The march from Madan Iewrynghep to the additional secretariat parking lot was organized by the Fridays For Future (Shillong Chapter) as part of the Global Week Against Climate Change.
The Shillong chapter of the Fridays for Future was started by Joel Blah Kyndiah, Da-e-mitre Pariat, Pratham Gurung, Justin Rangad, Anthea Jana and Bryan Warjri.
Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of the protest, Kyndiah said the objective of the march was also to demand the government to take measures to mitigate global warming.
He also urged school authorities to allow students to form the Fridays For Future so that the movement demanding for action on climate turns into a grassroots movement.
A memorandum was also resubmitted to the state government for its necessary intervention into the issue.
In the memorandum, the Fridays For Future wanted the state government to recognise that the citizens are in the midst of an ecological breakdown.
The group also wanted that the government acknowledge that climate change is a “real” problem which requires immediate attention.
They have also recommended that there should be mandatory use of public transport to address congestion in the city.
