Studies reveal key factors contributing to traffic congestion in Shillong city
Studies have revealed that narrow roads, on-street parking and increasing number of private vehicles are key factors contributing to the traffic congestion in Shillong city.
Replying in the Assembly, deputy chief minister in-charge urban affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar said the government has diagnosed where the lacunae lies in tackling traffic congestion in Shillong city.
He said the government has conducted thorough several studies to identify the key factors contributing to traffic congestion in Shillong city.
These studies include the Blueprint to decongest Shillong designed by the Home police department in consultation with IIM Shillong, and the Comprehensive Mobility Plan 2024 by Urban Affairs department.
“These studies reveal the following gaps in tackling traffic congestion. Limited road width:80% road are less than 7.5m. Limited road capacity: On-street parking reduces road capacity by 30-40%. Increasng number of private vehicles: High vehicular growth rate at 17.5%,” he said.
Further, Dhar informed that the government is committed to balancing development with environmental sustainability.
He said that the decisions to proceed with road widening and the creation of new parking spaces at Ward’s Lake and Phan Nonglait Park were taken after careful consideration of the growing needs of urban infrastructure to alleviate traffic congestion and improve accessibility for residents and visitors. The goal is to enhance public utility while safeguarding our natural heritage.
The deputy chief minister also informed that the redevelopment of Ward’s Lake project is still in the DPR stage adding that the redevelopment of Phan Nonglait Park project is currently in the concept and design stage.
“Efforts will be made to minimize tree cutting. This follows the successful example of the Urban Affairs department, which created a new parking lot opposite NEIGRIHMS without cutting a single tree,” he said while adding that alleviating traffic congestion is a multi-pronged strategy also involving redeveloping existing urban spaces.

we don’t have sufficient space for travellers to get up and down the local taxis, all roads have been becoming trading center and cater to all purposes. un mannerly moving of VIPs and police vehicles added to the menace. we don’t have sufficient over bridges at very high trafic spots. important points at firebriegade, onbosco, dhanketi , rihno ,9lad, motohran, khadc pt, polo and anjalee pump needs to be modifiied.Maximum no of vehicle owners have lost civic sense while travelling on roads.inadequacy of parking lots at many important locations has converted all road roads to parkings places and earning spots for lucky guys. same school timings has equally contributed to trafic jam. Finally the no of vehicles plying in Shillong city on daily basis needs tobe restricted, one person per vehicle should not more be allowed.

1. Traffic along Shillong roads is dynamic in nature,
2.Dynamic trends could be ascertained regarding :-
a. total road space , i.e. the product of available length multiplied by the average width, followed by
b. categorization of the available road space according to usage(in %tage terms), of the following:-
i. road space occupancy of (1) a static and (2)a dynamic nature ; throughout the 24 hour stretch .
The road user could also be categorized throughout the 24 hour period , to know the trends regarding whether the user is either from a.Shillong or from b. outside Shillong ; with sufficient data collected regarding the i. duration of daily road usage and ii. type of use.
The Traffic Department could also entertain the contribution of individuals and groups , besides the consultants and concerned line departments and functionaries.
In Marketing Management , the “Buyer Behaviour ” is of paramount importance.
Regarding Shillong Traffic, however, we could study and understand the behaviour of the “Road User”.

I am sick to travel in shillong, roads are narrow, I couldn’t reach my destination in time as I always got stuck in the traffic jams. Please dear government of Meghalaya please do something at the earliest because the no. of vehicles are increasing while the size of the roads in the heart of the city seems the same.

The Govt. should ensure that motor companies sell vehicles only to people who have proof of available parking space at home. This should be in collaboration with MUDA.
Offices should make space for parking. in case of space is not available, public parking should be accessible. I would suggest that the shnong should collect parking fees on their roads. This would encourage people to take public transport.
The public transport system should introduce a system where each citizen that take public transport, get reward points that can be used for rating people civic sense just like how our credit scores work. It could also be like coupons that can be used while shopping.
The govt should regulate two wheeler taxis.
Just like in other states, people can subscribe to monthly bus tickets before hand so they don’t have to pay everytime they sit on a bus. The same could be done for taxis as well where on the time of subscription each citizen is given credits. An app will calculate and deduct the credits. Based on this, the depart will credit the money to taxis. A business idea for those who read.
There will be challenges and change is not easily accepted and protest is ensured. However, with time, things will improve and certain practices will become the norm.

first encourage school goers to use busses instead of private cars…40 students in one bus can reduce the traffic to 40 cars…either students can take the schools bus or they can use car pooling…that will reduce the traffic on school hours…and also for government employees the government should provide bus services for them too…pick up and drop services just like private companies do to their employees…because they equally contribute to the traffic jam in the city…make it mandatory for them to use buses provided by their respective department…
