Swachh Bharat Diwas in West Jaintia Hills: New Sanitary Complex inaugurated and community clean-up
The District Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin (DSBMG) celebrated Swachh Bharat Diwas with a special program at the Ladmukhla Community Hall in the Thadlaskein C&RD Block of West Jaintia Hills on October 2. BS Sohliya, IAS, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of DSBMG, attended the event as the chief guest and inaugurated a new sanitary complex (CSC) at the venue.
In his address, Deputy Commissioner Sohliya emphasized the importance of consistent efforts in maintaining cleanliness at both community and household levels. He expressed optimism that the new sanitary complex would encourage more residents to adopt hygienic practices and utilize proper sanitation facilities. He also urged local leaders to ensure the maintenance and long-term sustainability of these facilities.
A pledge ceremony was held during the program, where participants committed to maintaining cleanliness and hygiene. R Kynjing, EE PHE RWS and Member Secretary of DSBMG, also spoke about the significance of cleanliness.
With an aim to promote cleanliness and hygiene across the district, the DSBMG had organized a program on September 30 at Shangpung village in the Shangpung Pohchnong Community Hall, where Comingone Ymbon, Minister of Food Civil Supply, was the chief guest. On September 28, the DSBMG conducted a program at Sabahmuswang village to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining cleanliness in both households and public spaces. Speakers emphasized the need for community involvement in sanitation efforts, highlighting that everyone has a role to play in fostering a clean environment.
The Safaimetre Samman awards were also given to selected individuals and groups in recognition of their significant contributions to the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Simultaneously, a town-wide cleaning drive was organized across all markets in Jowai Town. This initiative was conducted by the Deputy Commissioner’s office in collaboration with the Jowai Municipal Board, the Market Committee of Seinraij, Jowai, and local Dorbar Chnong organizations. Before the cleaning drive began, a brief program was held to emphasize the importance of cleanliness and encourage residents to develop habits of regular cleaning and respect for public spaces by minimizing littering.
The cleaning drive was led by Additional Deputy Commissioner DV Lyngdoh, with participation from members of the Market Committee of CNI and Iawshyiap, vendors, shopkeepers, and residents of Iawmusiang Tympang. Local residents actively engaged in cleaning their respective areas, fostering a community spirit of cleanliness and responsibility.
