Syntung dorbar condemns mob lynching incident
The dorbar of Syntung village on Tuesday condemned the horrific incident of mob lynching which led to the killing of a youth recently.
“We strongly condemned the incident and expressed our deepest condolences to the family of deceased victim,” Sordar of Syntung village, Robert Pale told reporters at a press conference held at the Shillong Press Club.
He however said that the incident had not taken place at Syntung but at Pashang village which is about 10 kilometers away.
It may be mentioned here that a group of nine youths were attacked by an angry mob on Sunday while they were on their way back to Shillong from Syntung village after having a picnic. They were accused of being the menshohnoh.
One of three youth who were brutally assaulted by the angry mob succumbed to his injuries. The deceased have been identified as Macmillan Kharshandy of Lumbasuk Block A, Madanrting.
Recalling the fateful night, Pale said on being informed about the incident, he along with the executive members immediately rush to Pashang village.
He said that they tried to defend the boys but were helpless due to the unruly crowd adding as a result around 5-6 executive members of the dorbar were also assaulted by the mob.
Asked, the sordar of Syntung however said that he could not identify the people who are involved in the attack and the village they belong to.
On the other hand, executive member of Syntung village Tympang Pohshna said that the village authority will extend full cooperation with the police to ensure all perpetrators involved in the lynching incident are arrested.
“If anyone from our own village is involved we will also ensure that they are punish as per law,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sordar Raij of Lyching, Wanslempor Lyching said that rumour about menshohnoh was spread from Mawsna village. He said the boys after getting lost while returning from Syntung had reached Mawsna village where they met some children and enquired about the road to Shillong.
“The children seem to get scared of them start shouting menshohnoh and that is how the rumour immediately spread in the area when people from the area start contacting each other,” he said.
