Tactical urbanism trial kicks off in Shillong under Reimagining Streets Initiative
As part of the Government of Meghalaya’s Reimagining Streets initiative, a Tactical Urbanism Trial officially launched on November 5, 2024. The project, spanning from IGP to the DC office junction, began with 25 students painting the street outside Aayakar Bhavan, with support from officials from the DC Office, Urban Affairs Department, and PWD.
“This approach involves visual measures such as painting, traffic cones, planter boxes, road markings, and signage,” said the Director of Urban Affairs in a statement. She added, “This month-long trial aims to gather user feedback on these changes, allowing for necessary revisions before permanent infrastructure is developed.”
The Tactical Urbanism Trial is a temporary, low-cost, and quick intervention to test urban design, transportation, and infrastructure improvements. Through this initiative, the Government, with community support, aims to create more vibrant streets and walkways, enhancing mobility while ensuring safety and enjoyment for everyone.
This initiative aligns with the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy, introduced by the Government of Meghalaya in January 2024, under Vision 2030. This vision dedicates 30% of road space to non-motorized transport, prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists for a more inclusive and safer city.
