Tanker drivers threaten to cease loading of petroleum products from Assam
The Hynniewtrep Petroleum Worker’s Union (HPWU) has threatened to cease loading of petroleum products indefinitely if the state government fails to address the problem faced by tanker drivers due to COVID-19 pandemic.
In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Thursday, HPWU general secretary RCR Kharsyntiew alleged that some of the dorbar shnong in Khasi and Jaintia Hills do not allow tanker drivers to return to their residence after coming for loading of petroleum products (petrol and diesel) from Assam.
He also reminded that the members of the union are the frontline workers providing essential service to the community. Kharsyntiew also asked if at all they are not able to return to their residence, where will they stay.
“I humbly pray before your good office to issue necessary directions to the dorbar shnong in general, to allow the tanker drivers to return to their respective residence after coming back from loading of petroleum products,” the general secretary demanded.
Kharsyntiew also warned that the Union will be left with no option but to cease loading indefinitely if the matter is not addressed by the government at the earliest to avoid any untoward harassment to its members.
