TB-Free tag for 19 villages in East & West Jaintia Hills
A total of 19 villages from East and West Jaintia Hills districts were declared TB-Free for the year 2023–2024. The announcement was made during the observance of World Tuberculosis Day, organised by the Office of the District Tuberculosis Control, West Jaintia Hills District, at the District Library, Mynthong, Jowai, on March 24, under the theme “Yes, We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver.”
The TB-Free villages in East Jaintia Hills District include Larket, Lelad, Khahar, Thlu, Mynthing, Lumshnong, Musiang Lamare, Lad Rymbai B, Musniang Rim, and Lad Rymbai Batsympien. The villages from West Jaintia Hills are Ionglong, Biar, Madanwan, Mowkyndeng, Mynska, Shkentalang, Muktapur, Lad Japlem, and Nongmulieh.

Additional Deputy Commissioner D.V. Lyngdoh, who attended the programme as Chief Guest, highlighted the importance of early detection, hygiene, and public awareness in the fight against tuberculosis. She encouraged students and the community to maintain a healthy lifestyle and support efforts to eliminate TB. She also urged healthcare workers, educational institutions, and the community at large to work collectively in raising awareness and ensuring timely diagnosis.
Dr. Ns.C. Tariang, MOTC Jowai TU, Panaliar, reinforced the urgency of accelerating efforts to eliminate TB and acknowledged that while the national goal is to eliminate TB by 2025, persistent cases in the district pose a challenge. She stressed the need for commitment, investment, and proper implementation of interventions. She also highlighted that early detection, prevention, and timely treatment are crucial to achieving progress.
Dr. L. Marbaniang, Nodal Officer of the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP), East Jaintia Hills, elaborated on the symptoms of TB and emphasized the critical role of early diagnosis in controlling the disease. She said that awareness and timely medical help are vital to breaking the chain of transmission.
As a mark of appreciation, the programme honoured health workers from both districts for their dedication and contribution to TB prevention and treatment. The Best Treatment Supporter Award was given to Baita Lapasam from Barato PHC and Deciple Pachiang from Sutnga CHC. The Best Lab Technician Award went to Margeet Lyngdoh from Dawki PHC and Wanrika Sutnga from Khliehriat Civil Hospital. The Best Performing ASHA Award was presented to Jenitris Lamare from Barato PHC, Amalia Lakiang of Lookyrwiang UHC, and Kimeri Bareh of Jalaphet HWC, Sutnga CHC. The Best MLHP Award was conferred on Darihun Kahrjahrim of Barato PHC and Sumarlin Laloo of Iongkaluh HWC, Pamrapaithlu PHC.
A drawing competition was also organised as part of the observance. The first prize was awarded to Sanly Chyrmang from Children’s Home Girls, Jowai. The second prize was jointly awarded to Sanwaka Challam and Nangbah Nangjngi from Children’s Home, Jowai. The third prize was shared by Resolve Dhar from Chilliangraij SSA School, Jowai, and Ibakordor Hadia from Dulong SSA UP School.
In the placard competition, the Best Placard was awarded to Loompyrdi Iongpiah UPS, the second prize went to Pohmusniang UP School, and the third prize to Dulong SSA UP School.
A rally was also held to mark the occasion, beginning from Dulong Playground and ending at the District Library in Mynthong, Jowai. Students marched with banners and placards, joined by teachers, doctors, and healthcare workers to raise awareness about tuberculosis.
