Thadlaskein League returns: A boost for local football
Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla on December 10 inaugurated the Thadlaskein Football League 2024-25, organized by the Thadlaskein Sports Association (TSA), a prominent sports body in the Jaintia Hills region known for producing talented athletes and football players who have participated in major leagues in Shillong.
The TSA was revived after losing its affiliation with the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) in 2019.
Following persistent efforts by locals and football enthusiasts, an adhoc body was formed, and with the support of 31 sports clubs under the TSA, the MFA lifted the suspension in October 2024.
The league has seen remarkable participation, with 58 teams competing at Wahiajer Stadium. Alongside the MLA, the event was graced by JHADC MDC Lakhon Dkhar, District Sports Officer Khroobok Passah, and TSA leaders, including President Kmenlang Shylla, Vice Presidents Ebris Pariat and Mutshwa Thabah, and General Secretary Ebormi Lyngdoh.
In his speech, Wailadmiki Shylla lauded TSA for its role in nurturing talent, noting that clubs from areas like Mukhla, Ummulong and Wahiajer now have greater opportunities to shine. He also addressed the financial challenges faced by clubs affiliated with the West Jaintia District Sports Association when competing in Jowai.
Encouraging young footballers, he emphasized the growing opportunities in football as a career and praised the state government’s efforts to uplift sports. In addition to financial aid of Rs 1 lakh for the champions from MLA and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Shylla announced Rs 50,000 for the runners-up.
The league was officially launched with the MLA unfurling the TSA flag. In the opening match, Jalapang dominated Takhniang SC with a stunning 9-0 victory. The game saw two hattricks from Lumlangki Phawa (17′, 40′, 75′) and Eladmi Lyngdoh (44′, 47′, 73′), with additional goals by Kynmaw Phawa (15′), Oliver Pale (30′), and Nangroi Laloo (69′).
