Tripura’s rail network expands: Guwahati-Agartala electrification nears completion, says Vaishnaw in Lok Sabha

Tripura’s railway infrastructure continues to improve significantly, with broad gauge connectivity established in 2016 following the completion of the Lumding–Silchar–Badarpur–Agartala gauge conversion project. This major development has enhanced the state’s rail links with the rest of the country; Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha on Friday.
Responding to a question on connectivity between Delhi and Tripura, the railway minister confirmed that Tripura’s capital, Agartala, currently has two direct train services to Delhi. Additionally, seven pairs of trains operate between Agartala and Guwahati, from where passengers can connect to seven more pairs of trains heading towards Delhi.
To further enhance connectivity, the electrification of the Guwahati–Badarpur–Agartala railway route is progressing rapidly. The Badarpur–Agartala section has already been fully electrified, while work on the Guwahati–Badarpur section is moving forward at an accelerated pace. Once completed, this electrification project will enable the introduction of more trains, reduce travel time, and improve overall passenger services.
The Union government remains dedicated to strengthening the railway network in the Northeastern region, with a particular focus on Tripura and neighbouring states. Key initiatives include electrification projects to enable faster and more sustainable train services, station redevelopment to enhance passenger experience and the introduction of new train services to improve accessibility and travel convenience, Vaishnaw added.
