Trucks transporting 20 metric tons will be allow to ply through two weak bridges
The District Magistrate, East Jaintia Hills District in a press release issued here informs all the Truck Drivers/Transporters/Drivers in East Jaintia Hills District that the Hon’ble High Court of Meghalaya has issued an order wherein the load bearing capacity of goods laden vehicles plying over the Umiam Bridge needs to be urgently restricted to a maximum of 20 Metric Tons (gross weight) of goods laden vehicles.
He also said that the Transport Department is the nodal department for checking and weighting of all goods laden vehicles as per section 114 of the CMV Act 1988 and is therefore authorized to restrict the total gross weight of any goods laden vehicle as required.
In order to ensure the safety of the Umiam Bridge, the State Transport Department hereby temporarily restricted from plying over the Umiam Bridge. All goods laden vehicles exceeding total gross weight of 20 metric tons are hereby temporarily restricted from plying over the Umiam Bridge.
He further stated that the no goods laden vehicles originating from East Jaintia Hills District exceeding 20 metric tons will be permitted to ply over the Umiam Bridge. In view of the above the District Magistrate, East Jaintia Hills District has imposed an Order under section 144 Cr.P.C. According to this Order, the vehicles originating from East Jaintia Hills District and plying through Dwar Ksuid Umroi Bridge Shillong Bye Pass, only 10 metric tons of gross vehicle weight are allowed.
In addition, 2 Axle 6 Wheeler truck should limit the weight to 19 MT and 3 Axle 10 Wheelers Trucks should limit the weight to 20 MT. Any Truck Drivers/ Transporters / Drivers violating the above will be punished as per section 144 of the CMV Act 1988.
The order come into force with immediate effect and until further orders.
