TUR files FIR against admins of a fb page for making defamatory claims
The Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) has filed an FIR against a facebook page ‘Ka Tynghung Na Rilum’ and its administrators for making libellous and defamatory claims against its members and sharing it on various social media.
“This circulation of false and defamatory claims regarding TUR members being given money to speak up on the government’s plan to evict people from Them Iew Mawlongs Punjabi Line is meant to suppress truth telling and silence dissenting voices,” TUR leader Angela Rangad said in a statement issued on Friday.
She also reminded that criminal defamation carries a prison term of two years along with fine.
Rangad said TUR hopes that Meghalaya police will do a quick investigation and chargesheeting to ensure that people do not use lies and violent speech to suppress democratic culture in Meghalaya.
“(We) insist that issues have to be debated upon even when people and groups hold differing opinions as that is the only way to arrive at long lasting and just solutions that will build our society and democracy,” she added.
