Two KSU leaders arrested for Ichamati aftermath
Two members of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) were arrested for their alleged involvement in the recent stabbing incidents in Shillong.
They have been identified as Melajied Khongbuh, who is the publicity secretary of the KSU Jaiaw Circle and Laldin Nongkynrih, a member of the KSU Mawkhar Circle, East Khasi Hills superintendent of police Claudia A Lyngwa said on Tuesday.
29-year-old Rupchand Dewan, a resident of Muslimpara in Borbila under Barpeta district, was stabbed to death and eight others were injured in the stabbing spree by masked men.
The stabbing incident is seen as a retaliatory attack following the death of a Khasi Students’ Union activist after being attacked by non-tribals at Ichamati village near Shella on February 28.
Lyngwa said following the incident of a series of stabbings by unknown persons at Iewduh (Bara Bazar) area on February 29, in retaliation to the death of (L) Lurshai Hynniewta at Ichamati, where one person (L) Rupchand Dewan succumbed to his injuries and 6 others grievously injured, the East Khasi Hills Police had left no stone unturned in meticulously collecting evidence and statements from eye witnesses.
She said during the last three weeks, police were able to collate all the evidences to identify the perpetrators of this heinous crime and yesterday (Monday) arrested one person who also confessed to have committed this crime along with 3 others accomplices.
On his leading the second accused was also arrested and the police are on the lookout for the remaining two who have been identified and will be arrested shortly, the SP stated.
