UDP hits back at Pala, says Congress desperate to topple MDA Govt
The United Democratic Party (UDP) has asked the opposition Congress not to train it’s gun on the party as the people of the state are not ‘blind’.
This came as a strong reaction to the allegations made by the new Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Chief Vincent H Pala that the UDP has misused the home portfolio for carrying out illegal collection along the national highways in the state and now it is trying to shrug off it’s responsibility following the recent law and order breakdown sue to alleged gunning down of the former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.
In a statement issued on Sunday, UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said that the UDP got only 6 MLAs in 2018 and that he do not understand why everyone is going hammer and tongs at UDP.
He said that Pala has now come to state politics, so he has to make some kind of impression that he can take the Congress forward.
Remains to be seen how the public will respond to his comments.
Stating that the Congress is fearing that the UDP may be elected to power in coming Assembly elections, Mawthoh said, “Perhaps, it is the fear that UDP will come up in 2023 as people in Khasi and Jaintia Hills have lost faith in the National parties.”
He also reminded that the Congress has ruled the state for a maximum period compared to others and all the ills and problems today is inherited from the congress, be it illegal coal mining, border skirmishes, failure in education sector, youth unrest, unemployment, farmer’s plight, high infant mortality rate, poor investment in tourism sector and so on.
The UDP leader also accused the Congress for failing to genuinely address the issues of safeguarding the interest of the indigenous people and also protection of the minorities in the state.
He said that the Congress is desperate to topple the MDA government by firing at the UDP so that it withdraw support.
“Congress has always been in the ruling and they are not used to being in the opposition.
They are desperate to topple the Govt that’s why they are firing at UDP to withdraw support to this Govt,” he said.
“This is politics at the lowest ebb. Congress should not only trained their guns at UDP. People are not blind…,” Mawthoh stated.
