UDP not to be a reason for instability: Lyngdoh
United Democratic Party (UDP) chief and Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh on Friday said his party has no interest in causing any political instability in the state.
“The UDP should not be the reason for any kind of instability,” Lyngdoh told journalists while reacting to a query if the UDP will claim for one more cabinet berth after winning the Mawphlang bypoll.
“We would like to see that the government is stable and completes its term. Because when instability is being created, the performance of the government and delivery to the people and the state as whole will get affected. Therefore, we assure stability will be maintained till the end of this term,” he added.
Asked if there will be a reshuffling among the UDP MLAs, Lyngdoh however said, “We never had this kind of thoughts or talks as far as our party is concerned.”
Lyngdoh also said that he was very glad about the performance of the Mawphlang MLA, who won by a margin of over 4,400 votes.
“This shows that the mind of the people is very much inclined to go for the UDP,” he said.
With regards to the Rajabala bypoll, Lyngdoh said, “See Rajabala is little different from other constituencies it is a mixed kind of population there, plain belts, hajong, kock, the hindus the garos – We had too less of a time to monitor as far as the campaign is concerned because of that mixed population. However, I am happy to see that our candidate managed to get over 7,400 votes which is not small so that has contributed to our vote bank as far as Garo Hills is concerned.”
The UDP chief has outrightly rejected the allegation of match fixing between the NPP and the UDP to defeat the Congress in the just concluded bypolls.
“Not at all, we don’t have that kind of understanding. We have our own candidates if we do that we are betraying our candidates it is not fair to do that,” he said..
He also refused to comment on the poll performance of the Congress and said that he is only concerned for the UDP.
According to him, the people will decide the fate of the Congress. Asked if any Congress leader had approached the UDP, Lyngdoh said it is premature to say right now.
