UDP seeks relaxation in upper age limit for govt job aspirants
The United Democratic Party (UDP) has asked the state government to relax the upper age limit for government job aspirants in order to address the growing unemployment problem in the state.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, UDP chief and Assembly Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh said, “The UDP has time and again taken up important issues concerning the people and the state and one of the important matters that came up in the deliberations is related to the distress and plight of the unemployed youth. Accordingly, a decision was taken to impress upon you and the government of the day to relax the upper age limit for recruitment to government posts in the state of Meghalaya.”
Stating that this is in consonance with the decision taken by different states for age relaxation, he said the reason behind this is to address the issue of unemployment and the growing number of job seekers who finds it difficult to make the selection as there is a mismatch between the number of applicants and job vacancies at different levels.
Besides, this will also ease the mental agony and frustration of the deprived applicants for fear of being over age, Lyngdoh said.
It may be mentioned that UPSC has also relaxed the upper age limit and many of the North Eastern states have also followed the same principle.
In Meghalaya, in the first of its kind, the education department has relaxed the upper age limit for ST up to 37 years.
Considering the justification made at the national and at the level of the different states, the rationalization for implementing the same in the state of Meghalaya may also be taken into account for the benefit of the job seekers, the UDP chief said while requesting the chief minister to expedite the matter to provide relief and succor to the job seekers in the state.
