UHM stages protest over Govt’s delay to implement free land registration
SHILLONG, APR 8: The United Hynniewtrep Movement (UHM) has threatened to intensify its agitation if the state government fails to implement on the spot free land registration for people residing along the interstate and international borders.
Speaking to media persons during a sit-in-demonstration held in the city on Thursday, UHM president Charlie J Rani said that the organization is of a strong opinion that providing free land registration will help the state government to resolve the long pending boundary dispute with Assam.
According to him, this will further strengthen Meghalaya’s claim over the 12 areas of differences especially if the state government decides to approach the Supreme Court for a permanent solution to this issue.
“Therefore, we demand the state government to implement the on the spot free land registration at the earliest failing which we would be compelled to intensify our agitation,” he said.
Asked, Rani said if the state government continues to be adamant, the organization will hold a massive protest to oppose the celebration of the 50th year of statehood next year.
“Because what is the point of celebrating the achievement of a statehood when the state is without any proper boundary for the past 49 years,” he said.
The UHM leader further slammed the state government for lack of development in the border areas and for always maintaining a soft stand against the alleged illegal encroachment and atrocities by the Assam government.
Later, the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh also called the delegation of the UHM for discussion on the issue.
“I have assured the delegation that we will be having a meeting regarding this border issue likely by next week when the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister comes back (from election campaigning),” Lyngdoh said after the meeting.
