ULFA-I failed to learn lessons from past: Ex-ULFA leaders
The leaders of the Ex-ULFA Oiky Manch have strongly criticized the Paresh Baruah-led ULFA-I (United Liberation Front of Assam – Independent) for its attempts to create unrest in Assam expressing disappointment that ULFA-I had not learned from past mistakes.
The Ex-ULFA Oiky Manch, comprising former members of ULFA who have signed a peace accord with the Centre and the state government in New Delhi on January 3, this year.
Addressing a press conference at the residence of ULFA founder general secretary Anup Chetia at Chabua in Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Sunday, Ex-ULFA Oikya Manch president Chakra Gohain emphasized that such disruptive activities only harm the state and its people, hindering progress and peace.
On August 15, Paresh Baruah claimed that they had placed 24 bombs across the state following which the state police announced a Rs 5 lakh reward to anyone providing information on the recovery of bomb-like substances from different parts of the state.
“Paresh Baruah also informed Anup Chetia that such a device was placed at his residence. Following this report, many circles are trying to malign the image of Anup Chetia, who has been taking the lead in the implementation of the peace accord signed with the Central and the state government on the key issues of the ULFA,” Gohain said.
“Anup Chetia, the founder general secretary of the ULFA and now an advisor to the Ex-ULFA Oikya Manch. Various circles are to malign his image at a time when the implementation of the peace accord is in progress. Chetia’s role as an advisor is significant, especially in guiding the ex-ULFA members through the peace process and helping them reintegrate into society,” he also said.
“Despite these challenges, Chetia remains an influential figure in Assam’s peace efforts, and his contribution is crucial to ensuring a lasting resolution to the issue,” he further said.
Gautam Neog, president, Dibrugarh District Committee of Ex-ULFA Oikya Manch, said
“The concerns over the activities of the Paresh Baruah-led ULFA-I are growing among those committed to peace in Assam. The peace accord can potentially address all the key issues facing the people of Assam. This accord is viewed as a comprehensive solution that can bring lasting peace and development to the state by addressing grievances and ensuring that the aspirations of the Assamese people are met.”
He added that the ULFA-I has seen a decline in its strength over the years, and in an attempt to regain its influence, the group has resorted to disruptive activities. These actions are seen as a desperate move to reassert their presence in Assam.
